Just what we need: Another billionaire Democratic candidate

Now, there apparently will be another wrench thrown into the 2020 campaign cycle: the possible entrance of billionaire, political activist and former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Bloomberg adviser Howard Wolfson says other candidates already have a big head start in the first four states to vote - Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and SC - and Bloomberg needs to be realistic about where he can make up ground.

Bloomberg, the billionaire former mayor of New York City, decided in March he would not run for president, despite leaning toward it for months.

Michael Bloomberg flirted with a presidential run in 2008, 2012, 2016, and just this year, when, after touring the country, he wrote in March that while he believed he "would defeat President Trump in a general election", he was "clear-eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field".

The Iowa caucuses, the first nominating contest on the Democratic primary calendar, will be held on February 3. "We will be asking them to make clear they are completely unaffiliated", longtime Bloomberg confidante Howard Wolfson said in one of more than a half-dozen tweets correcting the record to big-name accounts sharing the fake website.

In a joint statement Friday, New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley and Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price praised the "many qualified candidates" already in the race.

Mr Bloomberg could still opt against a run, even preliminary steps towards a campaign could damage Mr Bidens challenge. "I can't really talk about elections too much, obviously, because of the Hatch Act, but at the White House we're not anxious about anybody who's going to run against this president".

I used to think the answer was obviously the latter.

The conventional wisdom is that Bloomberg's entry amounts to a snub of Biden.

Bloomberg, 77, has told associates that he intends to run, and if he backed away from the race now it would represent an abrupt reversal that would recall his past flirtations with a presidential bid.

A Fox News poll in late October found Mr Bloomberg faces more opposition than enthusiasm at the outset of the primaries.

Presented with Mr Bloomberg as a hypothetical entrant into the primary, 32 per cent of Democratic primary voters said they would never vote for him and 6 per cent of Democratic primary voters said they would definitely support him.

Trump was responding to news that the billionaire Blomberg is opening the door to a 2020 White House bid.

Bloomberg announced earlier this year that he would not seek the Democratic nomination.

Billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is opening the door to a 2020 presidential campaign.

"If I'm not mistaken I'm doing pretty well, both relative to Trump and relative to all the people running", he said.

A Bloomberg adviser says the former mayor has not made a final decision on whether to run.

There is a competitive primary underway, with multiple Democrats who in head-to-head match-ups with President Trump beat him handily.
