Man stabbed to death in fight over Popeyes chicken sandwich, police say

Popeye's chicken sandwiches in regular and spicy varieties

A man was stabbed to death in Maryland on Monday in a fight linked to a Popeyes chicken sandwich, CBS Baltimore reports. He died at a hospital, officials said.

It happened around 7 p.m. Monday at a Popeyes restaurant in the 6200 block of Livingston Road, as both men waited for one of the popular sandwiches.

According to WJLA, the still unidentified victim was waiting in line for the sandwich, which returned to the restaurant's menu this week after a two-month hiatus, when he and another man began arguing.

"We do not yet know whether this was the result of a dispute over one of our products or something unrelated, but there is no reason for someone to lose their life on a Monday night in a parking lot", Popeyes said in a statement to NBC News. At some point, the victim was stabbed and the suspect fled the scene.

And, there have been other fights around the country where people seemed to be competing rather than just standing in line for a chicken sandwich.

She also urged the suspect, described only as an adult male, to turn himself in.

Donelan added that the incident was "extremely difficult" to put into words.

"We're looking for a male and that male knows who he is".

Newsweek has contacted Popeyes for comment.

Lines have been long at Popeye's Chicken since Sunday when the company relaunched its chicken sandwich, which quickly sold out after its initial launch in August.

"We have been able to determine that preliminarily that this is related to the release of the sandwich here at this restaurant", Donelan said.
