United Kingdom floods: Woman's body found after being 'swept away'

Residents told to leave homes as northern England floods

A woman was found dead in floodwaters which hit parts of northern England on Friday, as confirmed by Derbyshire Police.

There were more than 150 alerts in other areas of the country where the Environment Agency cautioned that flooding was either expected or possible.

The River Don, which flows through Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, hit its highest recorded level at just over 6.3m (21ft), higher than it was in 2007 when it also flooded.

"Our thoughts are with them at this time", police said.

The average monthly rainfall total for Yorkshire for November is 89mm.

Toll Bar Post Office worker Kathleen Overton, 61, told the PA news agency: "It was nearly biblical, I would say".

A resident told local media she had "never known it to be this bad".

"People's cars were getting submerged in the water, gardens were ruined, you couldn't drive anywhere".

The firefighters worked through Friday night pumping water away from homes.

The South Yorkshire Fire Service said Friday it had fielded 1,200 emergency calls and rescued 120 people during the floods.

Thirty-five homes were evacuated as a precaution in Mansfield after a mudslide in the area while hundreds of people were kept inside Meadowhall Shopping centre near Sheffield due to gridlocked traffic outside.

He added: "I think the most important thing is that the areas which have been affected by floods should avoid rain and get some respite".

In Lincolnshire, the River Witham had risen so much that residents said they were able to see swans swimming up to the edge of their properties.

The Met Office's amber weather warning for heavy rain covering parts of Yorkshire and the Midlands is in place until 6am and communities are bracing themselves for more of the deluge which brought travel chaos on Thursday.

"The rain is easing and moving south but obviously the impact of that will continue to be felt".
