Why You Got Weird Text Messages The Other Day

Thousands of Valentine’s Day texts mysteriously arrive months later

"Something odd is happening with text messages in the USA right now".

"During an internal maintenance cycle last night, 168,149 previously undelivered text messages were inadvertently sent to multiple mobile operators' subscribers, " Syniverse said in its statement to Gizmodo. Numerous texts were sent on Valentine's Day.

I can personally vouch for this, as I ended up with at least 3 random text-messages coming through my Google Voice application, which I use as part of my law practice. According to an October press release from Sprint that also involves AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, the "Cross Carrier Messaging Initiative" will "deliver the next generation of messaging to consumers and businesses" by developing a new messaging standard that the companies said would roll out in 2020.

It's unclear how many people were affected in total, but a thread on Reddit discussing the glitch now has almost 1,000 comments, many of which are users reporting their reaction to receiving the messages.

Did you send or receive some weird text messages overnight? As a result, thousands of Valentine's Day messages that were never delivered came through in Thursday's early hours - leading to some awkward and sometimes frustrating encounters.

Samantha Majorczak, a college student in Arizona, said she received a text that said "How is your day going?" from her dad - who died in March.

"It was a punch in the gut". A spokesperson said T-Mobile was aware of the issue and it has since been resolved.

California resident Barbara Coll mentioned she acquired an previous message from her sister saying their mother was doing properly, however she has been lifeless since June. When that server was reactivated Thursday, those messages got sent.

Several users say they received texts from deceased loved ones, including late husbands and friends. "I'm out looking at the ocean right now because I needed a break".

William Hurley, Syniverse's chief marketing and product officer, told GQ that the company apologized to "anyone who was impacted by this occurrence", adding that the service would be reviewing its procedures to ensure that similar errors don't happen again. Syniverse didn't immediately respond to a request for more details.
